Cameron Green believes he will feel less rushed at the crease on his return to Test cricket as he prepares to bat in his favoured No.4 spot.
Green will make his first appearance for Australia since the fourth Test of the Ashes in July after being recalled to face the West Indies in Adelaide.
The 24-year-old allrounder will be part of a reshuffled batting line-up following the red-ball retirement of opener David Warner.
Green has been a revelation at second drop for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield, averaging 65.09 across 24 innings at No.4.
WA teammate Mitch Marsh has nailed down the spot at No.6 in Green's absence from the Test side.
"I've let all the guys know obviously how much I love playing at No.4, and I'm obviously grateful for the opportunity to be able to do that," Green told reporters at the Adelaide Oval on Monday.
"I've always felt maybe a touch rushed at six, especially after Heady (Travis Head), who makes it look a bit too easy at No.5.
"I've always felt like I've maybe had to push the game along, where I feel like No.4 is my natural game where I can take my time and settle in."
Green has batted at No.6 in all of his previous 24 Tests, averaging a modest 33.59, with his sole century coming on a flat wicket against India in Ahmedabad last March.
But he is in some elite company with players who were forced to earn their stripes in a non-preferred position earlier in their career before being promoted.
Ricky Ponting spent years at No.6 before ascending to No.3 where he became arguably Australia's best batter since Don Bradman.
Another player in the conversation as the best since Bradman, Steve Smith, will move from No.4 to open with Usman Khawaja after Warner's exit.
"I think he's (Smith) super excited to be opening," Green said.
"He doesn't like waiting around, and he's happy going up and said that.
"I don't feel any pressure.
"Obviously, replacing someone like Steve is pretty tough, but I'm just going to play my way."
