Promising Wishaw youngster nets first pro contract with Hamilton Accies

Promising Wishaw youngster Marley Redfern is ready to take the next step in his football career, as he puts pen to paper on his first pro contract.

The central midfielder, 16, has signed with the Hamilton Accies development squad, the club he has played for since he was eight, writes Gregor Farquharson.

He left Braidhurst High this year to go full time with the Premiership club.

“I have been playing football for as long as I can remember” Redfern told the Wishaw Press.

“I used to play for Wishaw Wycombe before I went to Hamilton.

“It is going to be a great experience.

“Last season I did a sort of work experience with the older guys, so I have been in the environment before.

“I know that it is going to be different now as I will be training full time with them.”

Redfern is one of four Accies youngsters to make the step up for the 2019/20 season.

He will follow in the footsteps of current first-team players, such as Brian Easton, Scott McMann, Shaun Want and Lewis Smith.

They all graduated from the academy and performed well for the first-team, a pathway Redfern hopes to tread in the future.

Hamilton’s academy director George Cairns said: “I’m delighted to see the boys earn the opportunity to come in full time and develop themselves into professional football players.

“They have all worked extremely hard to get to where they are and now must prove that they are good enough to play for Hamilton.”
