Promising Newcastle youngster Kell Watts nominated for award - and you can vote for him to win

Newcastle United youngster Kell Watts has been nominated for the PFA League One Player of the Month award for February.

Watts, who made his first team debut for Newcastle against Liverpool on the final day of last season, has impressed on loan at Plymouth Argyle this term in the third tier of English football.

Having taken in impressive loan spells with Stevenage and Mansfield in League Two last term, the central defender - who can also play in midfield - made the step up to League One level after joining the Pilgrims.

He has made that step up seamlessly and has become a mainstay in Plymouth boss Ryan Lowe's back three, helping them cement themselves back in League One following promotion from League Two last term.

And his performances across February have seen him nominated for the monthly award alongside Sunderland duo Charlie Wyke and Aiden McGeady, as well as Peterborough pair Sammie Szmodics and Jonson Clarke-Harris and Lincoln City's Jorge Grant.

Watts has been backed to make the step up to the Championship next term, either on loan or with Newcastle should they suffer the indignity of relegation from the Premier League.

The 21-year-old is highly rated at St James' Park and he has two years remaining on his deal on Tyneside beyond the end of this season.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce was suitably impressed with Watts enough to bring him with the senior squad to their pre-season training camp.

He was only there three days before leaving the club on loan, but United captain Jamaal Lascelles revealed he 'blew everyone out of the water' in the running sessions.

Newcastle have been watching his performances in the South West keenly and it will be interesting to see how they manage Watts' development in the summer.

You can vote for Watts to be named the PFA's League One Player of the Month for February, here.
