Prominent SA lawyer critically injured after being hit by car

Heather Stokes is a regular guest on ABC Radio Adelaide and is well known for her social justice work.

High-profile Adelaide barrister Heather Stokes is in intensive care after being hit by a car on Sunday night.

Her former partner Kristie Molloy said Ms Stokes was hit by a car while crossing Main North Road in Enfield on Sunday night.

The circumstances of the accident are unclear.

Ms Molloy said Ms Stokes, 70, suffered multiple injuries in the accident, including bleeding on the brain, partially collapsed lungs, a dislocated shoulder, six broken ribs and a fractured pelvis.

Ms Stokes remains in the intensive care unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

It is understood Supreme Court Chief Justice Chris Kourakis has been informed of the hospitalisation and arrangements were being made for her court cases.

Ms Molloy told the ABC that she was mostly sedated but had periods when she was awake and alert, but did not remember how the crash happened.

Police said an investigation into the crash was ongoing and the 23-year-old driver of the car was uninjured.

Friends, including members of the legal community, have written messages of support on social media.

Ms Molloy said she was "devastated by what's happened" but grateful for the support.

The pair have a child together.

"My focus is on Heather and our child," she said.

"I have been overwhelmed by the huge amount of love and support from friends and family."

Ms Stokes became a spokesperson for transgender rights when she publicly shared her story of transitioning in 2012.

She is a regular guest on ABC Radio Adelaide talking about legal issues and is well known for her social justice work.

In 2017, she told triple j that she had not experienced any negative experiences of sexism since becoming a woman.

"On the whole, the legal profession took it pretty well," she said.
