Prominent Perth businessmen looking to move into politics at next month's by-elections in the city

Two prominent Perth businessmen are looking to step into politics at next month’s by-elections in the city.

Andy Chan and Aziz Rehman will stand in the Perth City South and Perth City North wards for the Conservatives when voters go to the polls on November 26.

Mr Chan, a former pupil at Craigie Primary and Perth High, runs a family takeaway in the city’s Glengarry Road.

He is known for his involvement with local community groups and is chairman of the Perth Chinese Association and a former chairman of PKAVS.

Mr Chan said: “I am delighted to have been selected for the by-election and it would be a huge privilege, alongside Cllr Audrey Coates, to represent everyone who lives here.

“I run my business locally and I am involved in local community groups so I understand the issues that matter to us.

“Perth is a fantastic place in which to live and work. It’s at the heart of Scotland and we need to grab every opportunity to bring jobs and prosperity to the city.

“Over the next few weeks, I will be speaking to local residents and businesses to hear your views on the issues that matter most in Perth City South.”

Mr Rehman is vice-chairman of the Perth Welfare Society Association.

Mr Rehman runs the family’s Must Eat takeaways in Perth and Aberfeldy.

He said: “The Conservatives supported a lot of local businesses. If I did not have their help during COVID I do not know if my business would still be here.

“I have lots of ideas about how we can improve Perth North and the wider city.

“As a business person I want to see businesses in Perth flourish. We are ideally placed in the very centre of Scotland to attract new investment and, importantly, to do more to support the small businesses who are the lifeblood of Perth and Kinross.”

The by-election in Perth City North is being held almost a year after former councillor Dave Doogan was elected as MP for Angus.

In Perth City South, the vote has come about after the sad passing of much-loved councillor Bob Band.

The SNP is defending both seats.
