Prominent Irish politician won't be charged over alleged alcohol thefts from petrol station

A prominent Irish politician is in the clear over alleged thefts of booze from a petrol station.

The Irish Mirror has learned that the Director of Public Prosecutions has decided not to charge the politician, who is a former TD still involved in politics — and instead he has been cautioned by gardai.

Earlier this year we revealed how the politician was arrested following thefts at a premises in Ireland on November 1 last year and March 14 of this year.

The politician, who is well known and has made national headlines over the years, was questioned by gardai in relation to both incidents.

He was subsequently released and a file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) which decides whether there will be any charges made.

It is understood that the alleged incidents of theft were filmed on CCTV, which was handed over to investigating gardai.

It is alleged that the politician entered the store on two separate occasions and stole a quantity of alcohol.

However this week the DPP ruled that the man not be charged over the alleged thefts — and gardai have now given him an adult caution instead.

The Irish Mirror is not identifying the politician — who we made frequent attempts to contact before publishing our initial story about his arrest.

The politician, who is involved in a major political party, again failed to return a comment to this paper when contacted about this story on Tuesday.
