Prominent Canberra law firm backs partner, founder over money laundering allegations

Aulich's founder, Ben Aulich, faces three criminal charges including money laundering.

One of Canberra's top law firms has publicly backed two of its legal partners after they were charged with money laundering offences.

Ben Aulich, 47, and Bridie Harders, 35, were arrested on Wednesday as police raided businesses across Canberra and Queanbeyan as part of an investigation into alleged money laundering.

A 54-year-old accountant was also arrested and charged, though his name has not yet been made public.

Mr Aulich and Ms Harders are legal partners at Aulich, which was one of the four premises police searched. Mr Aulich established the law firm in 2007.

In a statement, the firm's managing partner, Peter Woodhouse, said the charges would not derail the firm's work.

"The allegations will be met and ultimately dealt with in the new year," Mr Woodhouse wrote.

"Both Ben and Bridie have the full support of the firm.

"From the firm's perspective, it is business as usual."

Mr Woodhouse also thanked clients, friends and colleagues for rallying around the firm, and the "many hundreds" of people who had "reached out to us personally to offer your support".

Police said the raids and arrests were the result of an ongoing eight-month investigation examining the money flows of organised crime groups.

Mr Aulich and the unnamed accountant were charged with dealing with proceeds of crime greater than $100,000, money laundering and recruiting people to engage in criminal activity.

Ms Harders was charged soon afterwards with dealing with proceeds of crime and money laundering.

All three were bailed and will face court next week.

Police said they seized an "extensive amount of documents" during the raids, which targeted Aulich's city premises, an accountancy firm in Kingston, a grocery store in Queanbeyan and another business in the southern suburb of Farrer.

There is no suggestion that any other Aulich personnel are facing any allegations.
