CHICAGO _ A prominent attorney was shot and killed in what police say was a domestic altercation in his Northfield, Ill., home Monday evening, and a suspect was taken into custody hours later after a standoff with a SWAT team.
Steve Shapiro, 72, was shot just before 7:20 p.m. in the 200 block of Latrobe Avenue, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at 7:55 p.m.
Officers tracked down a suspect to a Winnetka home near Tower and Green Bay roads. The man barricaded himself inside as SWAT teams surrounded the building, according to police. The standoff ended about 10:35 p.m. when a middle-aged man wearing glasses, black shorts and black shirt was escorted out by police.
According to a news release from Northfield police, the suspect was being interviewed by the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force and "charges are anticipated to be filed against him as the investigation progresses."
Police did not release any details of the suspect or the altercation that led to the shooting.
Shapiro was a partner at the Mayer Brown law firm in Chicago, where he was the founder and senior member of the firm's Supreme Court and appellate practice.
"Under his leadership, the group has grown to become the largest supreme court and appellate practice in the country," the law firm says on its website. "Steve personally has been responsible for briefing more than 200 cases and for arguing 30 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court."
His biography on the website said that before joining the firm, Shapiro served as Deputy Solicitor General of the United States from 1981-1983 and as Assistant to the Solicitor General from 1978-1980. In his role as deputy in the Reagan administration, Shapiro's responsibilities included "briefing and arguing cases for the federal government in the Supreme Court and supervising appellate litigation in the courts of appeals."
