Prom eyes end to 19-year wait for second Thailand Masters title

Prom Meesawat follows a shot in the third round yesterday.

Prom Meesawat is in pole position to win his second Singha Thailand Masters title, taking a one-shot lead into the final round of the five-million-baht event.

Starting the third round one shot behind the leaders, the Hua Hin native carded a five-under-par 67 for a 12-under 204 total at Santiburi Country Club in Chiang Rai yesterday.

Prom is one stroke ahead of Sarit Suwannarut, who suffered a late bogey at the 17th hole en route to a three-day 205 total. Sarit's only All Thailand Golf Tour win has been the 2016 Pattaya Open.

The 34-year-old Prom, who won the event as an amateur in 1999, said he has been in good form of late.

"I have been playing good golf in recent weeks, especially on the first three days," he said, adding that he had a good memory of winning the title here 19 years ago.

However, he admitted that it may not be easy for him to win here again.

Prom said: "The course is much tougher now and you cannot make any mistake here -- it costs you a lot.

"The field is much tougher with many young golfers good enough to win here."

Jang Dong-Kyu of South Korea, bidding to be the third foreigner to win here after Lam Chih Bing (2010) and Kang Min-Woong (2011), sat just two shots behind the leader.

The South Korean fired six birdies and two bogeys for a 68, which gave him a 10-under 206 total.

Overnight joint leader Udorn Duangdecha was two shots down further following his third round 72.

Pavit Tangkamolprasert had a mixed round of an eagle, one birdie and three bogeys for a 72. He was on 209 and tied for fifth with 2017 winner Panuphol Pittayarat (72).

World No.127 John Catlin of the United States, the highest-ranked player in the tournament, scored an even-par 72 to share seventh spot with Thaworn Wiratchant (71), Kosuke Hamamoto (71), Natipong Srithong (72) and Poom Saksansin (74).
