Prolific striker confirms departure amid Nottingham Forest move links

Prolific striker Lawrence Shankland has issued a heartfelt goodbye to Ayr United, amid reports he’s set for a move to the English Championship.

Shankland has bagged 63 goals in just 74 games for the Scottish second division side, form which has seen a host of clubs in England monitor his progress, with one believed to be Nottingham Forest.

The 23-year-old is out of contract at Somerset Park now the campaign has come to an end, and in confirming his imminent departure, admitted he had enjoyed his two seasons at Ayr.

“Most enjoyable two seasons of my career so far and a time I’ll definitely not forget,” Shankland wrote on Twitter.

“Thanks to all my team-mates and the staff and wish everyone at @AyrUnitedFC all the best for the future.”

Martin O’Neill and Forest were one of numerous clubs linked with a move for the flying frontman, along with Swansea City, Sunderland and Hull, while it was reported earlier this year that he turned down the chance to move to Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gillois.

Celtic and Rangers are among the Scottish clubs that linked with a move for the ex-Queen's Park and Aberdeen youngster.

The Scotland Under-21 international last month said any future move would be motivated, not by money, but by playing regular football.

“I’ve played two full seasons now and done well,” he said.

“People were doubting me a wee bit at the start of the season because I’d been in the Championship but not done that great.

“It’s been good to show I can play at this level and if I get the chance to play in the Premiership or wherever then I will look forward to it.

“It’s honestly not about the money for me. I want to keep improving and the money will come if you do well enough.

“I want to go somewhere where I can go and show people what I can do.”

Earlier this month, Ayr’s chairman Lachlan Cameron revealed Shankland would be leaving the Honest Men, saying the club would not stand in his way.
