Prolific shoplifter who is banned from Coop in Nottingham is back behind bars

A prolific shoplifter who is banned from visiting any Coop in the Nottingham area reoffended when he stole meat, cheese and other grocery items.

Cory Smith, 39, is subject to a Criminal Behaviour Order to stop him going into Coop.

Such orders are aimed at tackling the most serious and persistent offenders where their behaviour has brought them before a criminal court.

Smith has 51 convictions for 269 offences - and the vast majority are for shoplifting and breaches of court orders.

At Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday (August 12) he was sentenced for seven offences of shop theft and seven offences of breaching a Criminal Behaviour Order.

Luc Chignell, prosecuting, said Smith is prohibited from entering any retail premises in Mansfield Road, Nottingham, which remains in place until May 3, 2022.

Lucky Thandi, mitigating, said Smith, who pleaded guilty, had been in custody since the end of February and he has been free of drugs.

He has started to see a mental health practitioner. He works as a housekeeper for three days a week in custody. He is trying to get an IT qualification. He wants to become a youth worker.

"He is making the effort to get his life back on track," added Miss Thandi.

Judge Mark Watson sentenced Smith, of Peveril Street, Radford, telling him: "You approach these proceedings at least with a degree of realisation and you know what is coming".

He said he had to deal with him for seven shop thefts, at three different locations, and they were at the Coop group.

"Each one of the shop thefts were committed in breach of a order designed to protect those premises from you," said Judge Watson.

Smith's total sentence was two years in prison. Twelve weeks in prison was passed consecutively for breaching a suspended sentence order.
