Prolific Monklands author meets USA penpal who inspired her to write

A prolific Monklands author was delighted to meet the transatlantic penpal whose bestselling books inspired her to write.

Teresa Watson of Glenboig published her first novel at the age of 69, after forming an online friendship with successful Californian thriller writer Rebecca Forster.

Since the release of Call Mama four years ago, the two women have kept in regular contact and even acted as judges for the Advertiser’s popular Short Story Stars writing competition.

Recently Rebecca and her husband Steve, himself a judge – of the US Supreme Court variety – were in the UK to witness their son Eric graduate from Oxford.

The couple decided this was an ideal opportunity to head north towards the end of their visit and meet with Teresa and her husband Drew.

Teresa, who has now puplished several novels including this year’s A Break for Julie, told the Advertiser: “When Rebecca told me she was coming to the UK it was too good an opportunity to miss.

“She has been a huge inspiration to me and one of the main reasons I decided to write.

“I’ve read all her books and love her writing style and ability to draw the reader in and leave them wanting more.

“When we started corresponding on social media, Rebecca was very helpful, offering encouragement and tips. She’s wonderful.”

The two couples met in Edinburgh, where Teresa and Drew acted as guides and showed Rebecca and Steve the capital’s sights.

Teresa continued: “We had a great time, Rebecca and Steve were just lovely .

“We visited the castle and the Royal Mile and they were very impressed with the all the history they learned about.”

Rebecca, who has more than 30 novels to her name, added: “We had a wonderful time in Edinburgh.

“It’s a beautiful city and it was so good to finally meet Teresa. We’ve been in touch regularly for a number of years now and it was great to spend some time together.

“Being in Scotland also reminded me of the fun I had judging all those wonderful stories submitted by the talented readers of the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser.

“I think it’s time for Short Story Stars to make another appearance. I’m sure Teresa would too!”
