Prolific Byker thief breaches community order by stealing gin from Iceland

A serial thief escaped with a fine after breaching a community order by stealing booze from a supermarket.

As previously reported on Chroniclelive, Cheryleigh Root was given the order, lasting for 12 months, in June this year after she was convicted of carrying a knife in Blyth and shoplifting. However, just five months later, the 35-year-old clocked-up her 32nd theft conviction and 60th offence on her lengthy record.

A court heard that the brazen crook this time walked into Iceland, went to the alcohol aisle, selected a bottle of gin and walked out without paying. However, it turned out to be a costly bottle of booze after she was quickly arrested and fined £120.

Root, of Denmark Street, in Byker, was due before Newcastle Magistrates' Court this week but failed to show and instead instructed her solicitor to plead guilty on her behalf. Claire Armstrong, prosecuting, said Root stole the bottle of gin, of an unknown value, from Iceland, on Shields Road, Byker, on November 14 this year.

Miss Armstrong continued: "The defendant has 59 offences on her record. Her last conviction was in June this year. She has 31 theft offences on her record, 27 of which are for shoplifting. She also has a conviction from June for shoplifting and she was given a 12-month community order."

Michael Crowe, defending, said: "She's got issues. She's living in a hostel and accesses local services for drugs and alcohol." As well as the fine, Root was also ordered to pay a £48 victim surcharge.
