Progress of LeBron’s ‘I Promise’ school featured in New York Times

The progress being made by LeBron James’ ‘I Promise’ public school in Akron, Ohio has been so notable in its first year that they’ve been featured in the New York Times.

Although growth in testing numbers is typically small, the Times’ profile of the ‘I Promise’ school shows that the early returns are much higher than expected. According to Erica L. Green of the Times, the growth of the test scores at the ‘I Promise’ school were in the 99th percentile among other students of the same age.

The 90 percent of I Promise students who met their goals exceeded the 70 percent of students districtwide, and scored in the 99th growth percentile of the evaluation association’s school norms, which the district said showed that students’ test scores increased at a higher rate than 99 out of 100 schools nationally.

For those who may not remember, this school year is the first for the ‘I Promise’ school. The students in the school were 3rd and 4th grade students deemed at-risk.

The school has plans to expand beyond 3rd and 4th grade in the coming years.
