A consultation on the removal of No Ball Games signs across North Lanarkshire has been agreed by the council.
A motion to tear down the signs was put forward by two SNP Group members including Wishaw councillor Fiona Fotheringham.
However, a counter proposal by the Conservatives to request a consultation report before the removal of the signs was passed instead.
Despite her motion being defeated, Councillor Fotheringham was pleased with the response from across the council chamber.
She said: “All parties agreed the principle of the motion of removal of the signs, which ultimately would not have been debated within council without the SNP motion.
“The amendment was a rewording of the original working and I delighted that this will be taken on board by North Lanarkshire Council and will ultimately send a positive message and encourage our youngsters to be healthy and play outdoors.”
The SNP’s proposals had been to remove all signs from North Lanarkshire by the end of 2020.
Conservative Group leader Meghan Gallacher insisted health and safety concerns had to be taken into account.
She added: “From our perspective we sympathised with the SNP motion; there was a lot we could agree on.
“When it is suitable we should take them down but what we need to find out is where they are placed and why because some of the signs were put up because they were near busy roads or in locations where it was dangerous for kids to play.
“We wanted to take a sensible approach, put it to committee and consultation with the public and see where we go from there.”
