Progres Niederkorn secure Rangers rematch as they survive Cork City Europa League fightback

Progres Niederkorn popped Cork City out the Europa League to secure a sparkling rematch with Rangers .

The Luxembourg side overcame their Irish opponents and will now face Steven Gerrard 's side just two years after dumping Rangers out the tournament in the most humiliating 90 minutes in the Ibrox side's history.

Progres looked to be on easy street after winning the first leg against 2-0 in Cork last week.

But goals from Garry Buckley and Conor McCarthy drew John Cotter's side level before Issa Bah wrapped-up victory for Progres.

Now Rangers, who are cruising to victory against St Joseph's in their own first qualifying tie, will get the chance to exercise the ghosts of 2017 and that infamous result that culminated in the bizarre sight of Pedro Caixinha remonstrating with furious Gers fans in the middle of a bush.

Ominously for Rangers, the man who secured the 2-0 win for Progres two years ago, Sebastian Thill, is still playing a key role for the Luxembourgians.

Rangers fans won't need reminding of their last meeting when their side surrendered a 1-0 first leg lead on the continent.

It all went horribly wrong a week later as the minnows grabbed only their second and third-ever goals in Europe to humiliate the Glasgow giants.

Gerrard's side, however, are suffering no such embarrassment against St Joseph's of Gibraltar.

Last week's 4-0 thumping on the Rock means tonight's second leg is a formality with Rangers currently well ahead.
