Progres Niederkorn keep Rangers Europa League rematch dream alive as they sneak past Cardiff Met

Progres Niederkorn have kept their hopes of a Rangers rematch alive after overcoming Cardiff Met University in their Europa League qualifying tie.

The Luxembourg side lost 2-1 to the Welsh side tonight in the second leg, but because of their 1-0 lead in the first tie, they go through on away goals.

Jordan Lam and Dylan Rees goals had put the hosts in control at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium, as they looked on course to make history and make it past the first round qualifiers for the first time.

But with 17 minutes to go Mayron De Almeida scored to bring the aggregate score back to 2-2, and because of the Belgian striker's goal in the first tie they will now play Cork City next week as they look to set up a tie against Steven Gerrard's side.

The Ibrox outfit first need to overcome St Joseph's in their qualifier next week, but if they do win they will have be set for a crunch encounter against the team who dumped Pedro Caixinha's side from the qualifying stafe in 2017,

Progres' captain Sebastian Thill, who netted the winner against Rangers two seasons ago, has told Record Sport he is depserate to play Gerrard's side again and wants to put them out again.

He said: We are so excited at the prospect of playing Rangers again and the draw has given us motivation.

“I was delighted when I heard the draw because it was such a good experience to play against Rangers.

“But the reason we can’t get too ahead of ourselves is last year we were also due to play Rangers if we had beaten UFA but we lost a goal in the last seconds to knock out us out.

“Hopefully we can go one better this time and certainly all the players want to play against Rangers again.

“And I am sure Rangers will also be happy with the draw despite what happened the last time. They will see it as a chance to take revenge.”

Francoise’s opener against Gers in Luxembourg was the club’s first European goal since 1981 and Thill’s strike sealed their first victory in continental competition.
