Profiling Seahawks rookie receiver DK Metcalf in fantasy football

The Seattle Seahawks added four skill position players to their roster during the 2019 NFL draft. Those four players will now be evaluated not just by coaches, other players, and the fans, but also by the millions of Americans who play fantasy football each season.

We are going to take a look at each of the Seahawks four new rookies through the lense of their upcoming fantasy football value for the 2019 season, starting with second-round pick DK Metcalf.

When the Seahawks traded up to select Metcalf with the final pick of the second round, they knew they were getting an elite athlete. What they have come to learn is how his route-running, football IQ and motivation to succeed are well above what many others had predicted, making him a potential star in this league.

The Seahawks are known as a run-first offense, and even after Doug Baldwin’s retirement the team still returns Tyler Lockett, David Moore and Jaron Brown to a quietly excellent receiving core for Russell Wilson.

Metcalf’s fantasy value will be tied into how often the team decides to let Wilson loose next season, which makes him a tough nut to crack. He will absolutely have weeks that top even the best fantasy wide receivers, but his consistency probably won’t be enough to merit immediate consideration as a starter outside of deeper fantasy formats.

Presently, Metcalf has an average draft position in the 110-120 range in fantasy football drafts, coming in as the No. 44 ranked receiver according to Fantasy Pros.

He’s a top-five rookie for those in dynasty leagues who host first year player drafts, but don’t expect instant production from the uber-athletic Metcalf as long as he is surrounded by other good receivers in a run-heavy offense.
