Professor Luke O'Neill tests positive for Covid-19 days after getting booster

Professor Luke O'Neill has confirmed he has tested positive for Covid-19.

The immunologist confirmed the news on RTE's Today with Claire Byrne this morning.

Prof O'Neill received his booster shot on Thursday but took a PCR test on Saturday which confirmed he has the virus.

He does not know what strain of the virus he has contracted.

The Professor of Biochemistry at Trinity College said he is feeling fine other than slight sniffles.

He was tested as he was a close contact.

Speaking to Claire, he said: "I managed to pick it up off a close contact last week.

"I'm feeling pretty good. A slight cough maybe, slight sniffles. But the vaccine is protecting me."

"I was a close contact. I was sent out three tests by the HSE. I took my second test on Friday and it came up positive. A very clear positive by the way. It comes up within seconds."

"I got my PCR test Saturday. Got the result yesterday which was positive. So now I'm stuck in isolation for the next few days.

"I had no symptoms to be honest. Slight sniffles but nothing major."
