Professor Jason Leitch warns: 'COVID is accelerating and we are worried'

The National Clinical Director Jason Leitch has today warned that COVID is accelerating and the Scottish Government is 'worried.'

It comes as 176 new cases were registered in Scotland in the last 24 hours alongside three deaths from people confirmed to have had the virus.

Speaking at the daily coronavirus briefing, Professor Leitch warned that the virus is 'accelerating' 'both in Scotland and around the world - highlighting that today marks 900,000 deaths around the globe.

The National Clinical Director warned how '235,000 people' around the world caught the virus in just one day yesterday, with '60,000 people' still in intensive care globally.

Speaking at the briefing, the Professor said: "Now Scotland, the UK and Europe have done well, the prevalence has been reduced - but it is now as you can see accelerating again.

"You can hear from our words and our concern that we are worried about it.

"The UK has reached 3,000 cases for the third day in a row, Scotland has had 1,000 new cases in seven days.

"We admitted 19 people up to the 26 August in a seven day period - we are at the edge of what we can safely do while maintaining the prevalence at this rate.

"We have to do better to get those numbers down."

It comes as the WHO expert David Nabarro warned that a second wave is 'coming' to the UK.
