'Professional mermaid' sets new Irish record for holding breath underwater

A “professional mermaid” has set a new Irish record for holding her breath underwater.

Elaina O’Brien held her breath for five minutes and two seconds as part of an international competition.

The event, which took place in Cebu in the Philippines, hoped to raise awareness about the role of freedivers in coral reef protection.

Ms O’Brien is a member of the Cork-based ORC Ireland (Ocean research and Conservation Ireland).
