CHANDIGARH: Distinguished veterinarian and reproduction biotechnologist Prof Moti Lal Madan has been selected by the Haryana government for the prestigious state Vigyan Ratna award for 2020 for his contribution in the field of science and technology. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 4 lakhs, a citation and a trophy.
Prof Madan developed more than 12 hormone microquantitation techniques among cattle and buffaloes. Innovating invitro fertilization technology (IVF) among buffalos, he produced, for the first time in the world, a buffalo IVF calf ‘Pratham’. An academician and research manager, he worked in Punjab and Haryana agricultural universities and in the NDRI, Karnal, for over 28 years in various capacities. He was also chairman of the livestock sub-group of the Haryana farmer’s commission, deputy director general, ICAR, New Delhi and a FAO/UNDP consultant. Other posts held by him include vice-chancellor, Deendayal Upadhaya University of Veterinary Science, Mathura, UP; vice-chancellor, Punjabrao Deshmukh Agricultural University, Akola, MS; deputy director general (animal sciences), ICAR, New Delhi; project director, embryo biotech, and joint director NDRI, ICAR, Haryana He obtained his bachelors and masters degrees from the Panjab University and PhD from University of Missouri, Columbia, USA.
