Prof Luke O'Neill gives update on health and symptoms after contracting Covid-19

Professor Luke O’Neill says he “owes science” as it saved him from getting severely sick when he contracted Covid-19.

The Trinity immunologist has also praised antigen testing saying it works brilliantly and limits the spread of the virus.

Prof O’Neill revealed he contracted the bug two weeks ago when he was identified as a close contact by a colleague.

This was despite being in a well ventilated room and remaining over two metres away from them.

He said the HSE sent him three antigen tests and while the first gave a negative result, two days later a second showed a positive result.

He wrote in the Sunday Independent: “I felt wiped out for a day or so. But after three days I began to feel better.

“The boosters and antigen testing should allow us to have an enjoyable Christmas and take some of the fear away.”

He said one big thing to look forward to in 2022 is the antiviral drugs, especially Paxlovid.

He added: “It offers huge protection from hospitalisation when taken three to five days after symptom onset. My dose was mild, but if it had been worse and Paxlovid had been available I would have taken it as another piece of science to rely on.”
