Production on Irvine Welsh thriller 'Crime' begins in Edinburgh as novel to become Britbox series

Production has begun in Edinburgh for a TV adaptation of one of Irvine Welsh's novels.

The author is already well known for 'Trainspotting' and 'Filth', but will now see another of his works hit screens across the country.

This week, crews arrived in the capital to begin filming for 'Crime', an original series that will be based on Welsh's thriller.

Set in Edinburgh, the written sequel to Filth follows the story of of Ray Lennox, a Lothians detective who attempts to get over a mental breakdown by taking a holiday to Florida with his fiancee.

However, the events that unfold there begin to remind him of the child murder case in Edinburgh that caused him to suffer the breakdown in the first place.

Coming to the streaming platform BritBox, the series will be filming for the next 12 weeks in the capital as well as Glasgow, and should be available for viewing later this year.

Directed by James Strong, the show will feature Dougray Scott as Ray, with other actors such as Angela Griffin, Joanna Vanderham and Jamie Sives.

Speaking about the project, Dougray Scott said : “Irvine Welsh is one of Scotland’s greatest ever writers and I am proud and excited to be working on his first adaptation for television. It’s an honour to be working with such a talented cast, and creative team”.

Director James Strong added: “I’m thrilled to be starting production on this dramatic execution of Irvine’s brilliant novel. With a great cast in place we’re working together to create a classy work of pathos and genuine emotional quality which is grounded in gritty realism. Viewers can expect a dark, visceral, shocking ride."
