Just like the actual show, the BTS of The White Lotus appears to be rife with drama, with production members coming forward with new details about Helena Bonham Carter‘s since-scrapped character following her shock exit from the cast.
ICYMI, Carter departed the upcoming fourth season of the HBO show just nine days into filming in France, with a network spokesperson saying the actress’ vision for her character “did not align” with that of Mike White, who created and wrote the show.

“With filming just underway on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set,” the HBO spokesperson said.
“The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks.”
Carter’s exit — particularly amid reports that the character was written with her in mind and the fact that she was the biggest casting announcement — sent the rumour mill into overdrive, even though explicit details about her role weren’t divulged.
But in a recent report from Variety, The White Lotus‘ producer David Bernad revealed that Carter was originally going to play a washed-up star chasing a career comeback against the backdrop of the Cannes Film Festival, which will take place throughout the events of season four.
Bernad added that the new season’s focus will be on fame, with Carter’s character representative of “who has the world’s attention [and] who are the people that can grab the world’s attention”.
Digging deeper, Variety reported that the misaligned vision between Carter and White revolved around the latter’s “demand for a boisterous performance”, which Carter evidently wasn’t on board with.
However, as mentioned by the HBO spokesperson, that role has been rethought and rewritten, with Carter’s recently announced replacement Laura Dern “filling a similar role in the ensemble”, Variety wrote.

With so many vague tidbits, Carter’s departure prompted a bunch of inside sources to come forward with claims about exactly what went down on set, including recent tips given to Deuxmoi.
The gossip page shared claims that Carter and White were “essentially at odds from the start” and that their working styles were “completely incompatible”.
The tip comes alongside rumours of an on-set rift between Carter and her co-star, Sandra Bernhard.
“The word is Helena left because of a clash with Sandra Bernhard,” a source dished to The Daily Mail.

But before rumours of a feud between the two leading ladies could blow up, a rep for Carter denied the claim to the publication and stressed the Harry Potter star hadn’t met Bernhard in the early stages of The White Lotus‘ production.
We’ll have to wait and see how it all shakes out when season four of The White Lotus eventually hits screens, but in the meantime, let’s start a petition for a making-of doco so we can get the full tea without all the vague statements and insider claims!
