March 07--Talk about a house steeped in all things Hollywood. Film and TV producer John Goldwyn and hotelier Jeffrey Klein have sold their Hollywood Hills home for $5.35 million.
The restored house, built in 1951, was once part of a compound owned by early filmmaker George Cukor. He directed the 1940 version of "The Philadelphia Story" starring Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart as well as the 1964 "My Fair Lady" musical film starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.
The design of the residence is a stellar example of architect John Elgin Woolf, known for developing the Hollywood Regency style.
Set above the Sunset Strip, the walled home is entered through a gated courtyard. Hedges and mature trees cocoon the house and yard in privacy.
Fourteen-foot-tall ceilings create a feeling of volume in the living room, where one wall has floor-to-ceiling windows flanking a brick fireplace. An oval screening room features copper crown molding, suede walls and parquet floors. The screen retracts into the ceiling to reveal a wall of windows looking out on the garden. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the master bedroom also take in views of the grounds.
An Asian-inspired den with a wall of storage, a wide gallery kitchen that opens to the outdoors, three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms are within the 2,760 square feet of living space. There's an outdoor shower off the master bedroom.
Hedges surround the backyard swimming pool.
Goldwyn, who bought the house in 2005 for $2.815 million, is a former president of motion pictures at Paramount. He was executive producer of the television series "Dexter." He and his father, Samuel Goldwyn Jr., produced the 2013 film "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." His grandfather, the Oscar-winning Samuel Goldwyn Sr., was an early filmmaker.
This year he is working on a "Dexter" spinoff, a TV miniseries and the comic film "Masterminds." Klein is known for L.A.'s Sunset Tower Hotel and the City Club in Manhattan.
