Prodigy 12-year-old pianist steals show at launch of Leeds mum's book inspired by cancer death

A 12-year-old boy with dreams of becoming a concert pianist was the star of the show as Leeds Children's author Anita French launched her book at Bramley Trinity Methodist Church.

William Nguyen, a student at Chethams School of Music in Manchester performed at the launch of Jack and the Ultimate Dare book launch on Saturday, May 21 alongside Instagram artist Lydia Coleman. The event was attended by 30 people and featured a "choose your dare stall" where children would choose a dare of a challenge for the chance of winning a "sweet prize".

Mrs French was inspired to write a children's book in honour of her mother, who died from cancer before realising her own dreams of becoming a published author. She described William's performance as amazing. She said: "William didn't disappoint with his amazing skill as a pianist.

"He played some background music to start with and then had his moment to shine, when he played Beethoven all without music sheets and completely from memory. Everyone was hugely impressed by the 12-year-old who surely will do great things as a musician in the future."

Mrs French told Leeds Live William was an exceptional artist despite his age, having passed grades one to five in just a single year. She said: "William Nyguyen is a 12-year-old student from Chethams School of Music, Manchester.

"He has high hopes to become a concert pianist; which would be a great achievement as he has only being playing the piano for three years. He passed grades one to five in only one year."

The book Jack and the Ultimate Dare is available via most online book shops.
