The collection, segregation and processing of waste materials through local bodies will be stepped up, Minister for Local Self Governments M.V.Govindan has said.
He said that 813 local bodies, including 49 municipalities, have entered into a contract with the Clean Kerala company for this purpose. Haritha Karma Sena volunteers have been trained in segregating the collected waste and assessing their value.
Until now, 3,502 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste have been collected and an amount of ₹1.99 crore handed over to the local bodies. The collected waste will be transported only in vehicles equipped with GPS to prevent dumping. The use of pulversied plastic waste materials for road tarring has increased. Out of the 2,783 tonnes of plastic waste material which were pulverised for the purpose, 2,508 tonnes have been used for road construction.
