Problems mount for Adelphi Hotel as hygiene rating is slashed

Problems are mounting for one of Liverpool's most well-known hotels after its food hygiene rating was slashed.

The Adelphi Hotel in central Liverpool is already the subject of two separate city council Environmental Health investigations. It has now seen its hygiene rating drop to two out of five following an inspection in September.

One of the ongoing Environmental Health investigations concerns the shocking death of 21-year-old Chloe Haynes at the hotel. Chloe was found dead having been crushed by a wardrobe on September 10.

She had travelled to Liverpool from Hafan y Mor Haven Holiday Park in Pwllheli, North Wales, where she worked, for a night out. She was sharing a room at the city centre hotel with a colleague, who found her body and raised the alarm.

Today the ECHO can reveal that the Adelphi Hotel - owned by Britannia Hotels - is the subject of a second council investigation following an incident earlier this year.

A spokesperson for Liverpool City Council said: “Liverpool City Council’s Environmental Health Department is currently involved in an ongoing investigation relating to a guest who was injured at the Adelphi Hotel, in May this year.”

There are no other details available related to the incident. But it means the hotel is now the subject of two ongoing probes by the city council's Environmental Health department.

To add to the problems of the Adelphi - and its owners Britannia Hotels - the famous old hotel has now had its food hygiene rating slashed by the council. The Food Standards Agency website shows the hotel now has a hygiene rating of just two out of five following an inspection on September 7. Until recently the hotel had a rating of four out of five.

According to details on the website, the main area of concern found by inspectors was related to hygienic food handling, which includes food preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage. The inspection found that improvement was necessary in this area.

The inspection found the two other key areas - of cleanliness and condition of facilities and building and management of food safety - were general satisfactory.

We have repeatedly attempted to contact the Adelphi Hotel and its owners Britannia Hotels in recent weeks regarding the ongoing investigations and concerns raised and they have failed to respond. We have again attempted to contact them today for a response on the food hygiene rating but have so far received no response.
