Probe of exploding device that took two off teen's fingers continues

HARTFORD _ The Hartford bomb squad will conduct forensic tests on what's left of a homemade explosive device as part of their probe into a blast that caused a teen to lose two fingers Sunday, police said.

The 16-year-old found the device under a car on Gray Street, a residential street in the city's West End. He was manipulating the object when "it just blew up in his hand," Lt. Paul Cicero said Monday.

The device was no bigger than a golf ball and appeared to have been made with household products, police said. Police don't know who made it or why.

"It's peculiar," Cicero said. "There's no evidence the kid manufactured it or knew anything about it."
