Probe launched as man's body found in wheelie bin by Waitrose in north London

The shocking discovery of a man's body in a wheelie bin behind a supermarket has sparked a police investigation.

The body was found behind Waitrose in north London's Islington at 4pm yesterday.

A crime scene and forensic tent remain in place as police probe the death of the man, who has yet to be identified.

"Police were called to Tollington Road, Islington, shortly before 4pm on Saturday, May 11, to reports of a man’s body found in a wheelie bin," a police spokesman confirmed.

“Officers attended. Road closures have been put in place at the scene.

“Detectives are working to establish the man’s identity. At this stage, the death is being treated as unexplained.”

In the days leading up to the death alleged sightings of drug dealing in the supermarket's car park was reported on by the Islington Gazette .

A woman told the paper under the condition of anonymity that she saw a white van driving to the area "three of four times a day" to sell hard drugs to a group of addicts who "just stand there and wait" for their next fix.

She claimed people "smoking crack" and "screaming" outside her house close to the crime scene was a daily occurence.

There is no suggestion the death is drug related.
