A probe has been launched after a man died when he 'took unwell' in custody at a Scots court.
The 46-year-old was rushed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after falling over in the city's Sheriff Court and dying a week later.
It's understood the man, named locally as Stephen Simpson, hit his head while awaiting his appearance.
Police say that he had presented himself for arrest on a warrant and was due to appear in court.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: "A 46-year-old man took unwell prior to appearing from custody at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Wednesday, 2 June, and was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by Geo-Amey staff but sadly died later.
"The individual had previously been taken into custody at Kittybrewster Police Station on Tuesday, 1 June, having presented himself in relation to a warrant.
"As is standard when an individual has died while in custody, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service has directed the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner to investigate the circumstances and we will fully assist the PIRC's enquiries."
