Probe launched after two women aged in their 60s and 90s pushed to the ground and robbed in Macroom, Co Cork

Two ladies were knocked to the ground and robbed in a sickening attack in Co Cork town on Tuesday.

The women, aged in their 60s and 90s, were out walking in the Castlegrounds, Macroom shortly before 3pm when they were shoved to the ground.

Two men, believed to be aged in their late teens or early 20s, robbed the women's handbags before fleeing from the scene.

Both men ran into Macroom Golf club and out onto the road at Sleeven Upper before escaping.

According to Cork Beo, the lady in her 90s had to be brought to Cork University Hospital with minor injuries as a result of the attack.

Gardai are investigating the incident and are appealing for witnesses who may have been in the area at the time to come forward.

A garda spokesperson said: "The two suspects are described as both being tall, thin and in their late teens/early 20s Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the Castlegrounds in Macroom, Macroom Golf Club or Sleeven Upper, and who may have seen the two men.

"Gardaí are also seeking any drivers who were in the area at the time and who have dash cam footage. Gardaí can be contacted at Macroom Garda Station on 026 20590, The Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing."
