A man has died in custody after he was arrested in the NSW Northern Rivers region, prompting police to launch a critical incident investigation.

Officers from the Richmond area command were called to the showground on Summerland Way in the town of Casino just after 1pm on Sunday to investigate reports of an assault.

Police said when they arrived, a 48-year-old man assaulted an officer before he was arrested and taken to Casino Police Station.

Police said the man became unconscious, and an ambulance was called and medical assistance rendered.

Despite the efforts of responding police and NSW Ambulance paramedics, the man died in custody.

The State's Crime Command Homicide Squad is investigating the circumstances surrounding the man's death.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
