Probe launched after fire breaks out at Glasgow crematorium during funeral

Firefighters have battled a blaze in a Glasgow crematorium that broke out during a funeral.

The incident happened in the basement of Linn Crematorium in the Castlemilk area.

Three fire crews were called to the blaze with two members of staff treated by paramedics in the incident last month, the Daily Record reports.

The fire is understood to have broken out after the casket had been lowered and away from the view of mourners. Funeral services were diverted to another crematorium almost 10 miles away while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Glasgow City Council has now launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire.

A spokesman for the local authority said: “The fire service was called to deal with an incident at Linn Crematorium and a fire was extinguished.

"A full investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.”

Two services due to take place that afternoon had to be held at Daldowie Crematorium in Uddingston, Lanarkshire. Linn Crematorium was able to reopen as normal the following day.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We were alerted at 12.32pm on Wednesday, June 23, to reports of a building on fire at Lainshaw Drive, Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting the basement area of a building. Two casualties were in the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
