Probe launched after death of 'lovely guy' killed in Scots fishing tragedy

A probe has been launched after a Scots fisherman was tragically killed after falling overboard 'doing what he loved'

Peter Gray was a longstanding and well respected fisherman in Cove in Berwickshire.

He died after falling overboard the creel boat the Saint Peter near the port of Cove, south of Dunbar on May 2.

A massive search was launched for the 63-year-old after the boat was found unmanned.

Lifeboats and helicopters were called to the area.

The fishing community of the town rallied round and also joined in the search.

Lifeboats were drafted into the search (RNLI)

Sadly he was found dead in the water by a helicopter at around 6pm.

Watchdog body the Marine Accident Investigations Branch have now launched a probe into the incident.

They are currently in the preliminary investigation stage.

Following Peter's death, tributes have been paid to the 'lovely guy' from the close knit community.

Gaynor Smith wrote: "This is heartbreaking news. Our thoughts and love go out to the family and friends of Peter Gray and our whole fishing community at this very sad time

Christine Gullon commented: "He was a lovely guy thinking of his family at this sad time."

Another local said: "Tis sad,I remember him down at the harbour,,he died doing what he loved."

While a fourth wrote: "A terrible loss!"

In a statement Dunbar RNLI wrote: "On May 2 Dunbar’s all-weather and inshore lifeboats launched yesterday (Sunday) to help search for a fisherman reported missing after a vessel was found unmanned a mile northeast of Torness.

"UK Coastguard tasked both boats at 4.35pm after the creel boat was discovered with no persons on board.

"Both the all-weather (ALB) and inshore (ILB) lifeboats began extensive searches of the area at 5.05pm and were joined by the rescue helicopter. St Abbs lifeboats also launched, while a number of local fishing vessels also joined in the search.

"The casualty was located at around 6pm by the rescue helicopter. The crew of the ALB recovered the vessel and brought it to Dunbar Harbour where police began conducting inquiries into the incident."

A spokesman for Dunbar Lifeboat said: “Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends of the person involved.

“We would also like to thank the fishing vessels who helped enormously with the search operation.”

Fishing remains one of the UK's most deadly jobs.
