Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon has ordered an investigation into recent smuggling of oil in the South and dismissed four soldiers found to be involved from the military.

Gen Prawit, also defence minister, said the 4th Army had seized about 50,000 litres of untaxed oil and arrested four non-commissioned officers.

The four had been discharged from the military, Gen Prawit said. An investigation was being launched to arrest others involved, including more officers, and buyers.

Asked whether the oil smuggling was linked to any politicians in the South, Gen Prawit said there was no clear evidence at this time.

Last week, a combined force of soldiers, police and customs, excise and energy officials seized 45,260 litres of untaxed oil found on eight oil trucks and arrested 18 suspects in tambon Bang Kung, Muang district, Surat Thani.
