Probe into £6.8bn Asda deal closed after EG Group completes petrol stations sell off

An investigation into the acquisition of Asda by the Issa brothers' EG Group has been dropped following the sale of almost 30 petrol stations.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has closed its probe into the £6.8bn deal after the Lancashire-headquartered group completed the sale of 26 sites to Park Garage Group and one to James Hall & Co.

The transactions were completed on November 29 and November 15 respectively.

The news comes after EG Group announced it had found buyers for the sites in October.

CMA) announced in June 2021 that it had agreed formal undertakings offered by Mohsin Issa, Zuber Issa and TDR Capital to sell some of EG Group’s petrol station sites.

The move was agreed to address the competition concerns relating to the separate acquisition of Asda.

In a statement issued in October, the Issa brothers said: "We received significant interest in the sites we marketed, reflecting how these high-quality assets have been acquired, developed and invested in by EG Group over the last few years.

"We are pleased that the sites will be going to an established industry operator in Park Garage Group, a family-run business that is growth orientated."
