Probe continues into 'nasty fight' as questions remain over pensioner's death

A man remains under investigation as police continue to probe reports of a fight on Liverpool Marina.

John Williams Senior died six days after being taken to hospital in a critical condition following the incident, near the Yacht Club restaurant, in October.

A Wirral man, who was arrested on suspicion of assault, remains on conditional bail amid ongoing inquiries into what happened that night.

Emergency services were called to Coburg Wharf at 8.05pm on Friday, October 15, following reports a man in his 70s had been attacked.

Mr Williams Senior was taken to hospital in a critical but stable condition as Merseyside Police cordoned off a significant area while detectives launched an investigation.

That cordon surrounded The Yacht Club restaurant, its car park and a section of pavement along South Ferry Quay.

Police turned away Yacht Club customers, with potential witnesses said to have been kept inside the venue while enquiries began.

It was later confirmed that Mr Williams Senior had died in hospital on October 21. His family is being supported by specialist officers.

A Home Office post mortem, held to establish the cause of the 70-year-old's death, has been carried out but the results have been withheld pending the conclusion of toxicology reports.
