A probe has been launched into the death of a 51-year-old man after he was released from police custody in Fife.
On February 21 this year officers the man was arrested after police were called to reports of a break-in Newburgh, Cupar.
The man was charged and later released to appear in court at a later stage.
However, after being released, the man died.
The Crown Office have now ordered the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner to investigate the incident.
The probe will look at “the actions and decision-making of officers from when the man was arrested until he was released.”
A Police spokesperson said: “Around 9.30pm on 21 February, 2021, officers were called to a report of a man attempting to break into a property in Newburgh, Cupar. Officers attended and a 51-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.”
In response to the PIRC referral the spokesperson added: "We are aware of the referral to PIRC and therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further."
