Probe after decomposing body found underneath blankets and television in Edinburgh flat

Efforts are being made to establish whether a decomposed body found in an Edinburgh flat this week was a male or female.

The corpse was discovered beneath blankets and a television inside a flat in the Dumbiedykes area of the city.

The death is currently being treated as unexplained by police and attempts to identify the person who passed away are ongoing.

Officers were contacted after two men, who were locked inside the property, found the body.

The Daily Record reports that the flat, on Dumbiedykes Road, is frequented by drug users. A source told them that those in the property were told not to look inside the bedroom by whoever locked them in, but curiosity got the better of them.

It is also reported that police could also face a probe as it is understood that they were first called about the death in January but left when there was no answer at the door.

A police spokesperson said: "Police in Edinburgh responded to an address in Dumbiedykes Road at around 7am on Friday, April 19, following a report of concern for the occupants.

“On arrival, officers found the body of a person within and this death is currently being treated as unexplained.

“Inquiries are ongoing and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

They added: “We can confirm a previous call was made to this address on January 30, 2019, and inquiries in relation to this matter are ongoing.”
