Pro surfer attacked by a shark - but heads to the pub instead of hospital

A professional surfer refused to to the hospital and headed to the pub after being bitten by a shark.

Franklyn O’Rourke was surfing in Jacksonville, Florida yesterday when the shark bit him on his elbow and knocked him off his board.

Shocking footage recorded on the beach's surf cam shows the shark come out of the water and lunge at  Mr O'Rourke after he went over the back of a wave.

The 23-year-old stunned his pals who thought he needed "a stitch or two" by heading straight to a bar at the beach where he was bought free booze by stunned drinkers.

His friend RJ Berger told News4Jax: "He immediately went to a bar cause he was like, ‘I got bit by a shark,’ and people were like, ‘I’ll buy you drinks!’ So he went and hung out at the pier.

“He was right there behind the wave and boom – that’s when he got hit and you can see the shark’s tail splashing- it like, knocked him off his board."

Mr O’Rourke did not need any hospital treatment after the attack and later posted a video on social media about it.

He said: “I’m happy to be here and alive and well.

"I’ve never felt force like that from any animal or anything in my life, so I was in shock."

Mr Berger, who is a keen surfer, said the incident won’t stop him from hitting the waves.

“It’s inevitable, it’s gonna happen,” he said.

“It’s happened to a couple of my friends. It does bother you, but, I mean, if it’s gonna happen, it’s gonna happen. There’s nothing much you can do to really stop that, so try not to worry about it.”

There was another attack yesterday around 100 miles away in New Smyrna Beach, near Daytona, where a man was bitten on the leg while riding a boogie board.
