Pro-Palestine activists protest against Israel at Eurovision opening ceremony

PRO-Palestine activists have protested Israel's involvement in Eurovision during the competition's opening ceremony.

The official opening of Eurovision Week was marked by a Turquoise Carpet event on Sunday in Basel, Switzerland.

Delegates from the 37 competing countries took part in a parade across the city, travelling along the route in vintage trams.

They were met by thousands of fans, dancers and drummers, before reaching the end of the route at the Eurovision Village where were expected to give interviews and meet with the public.

As Israeli entrant Yuval Raphael, a survivor of the October 7 2023 Hamas attack, arrived at the opening ceremony, she was met with several Palestinian flags in the crowd, as protesters could be heard shouting: "Shame on you!"

And during the parade, one protester was seen crossing over the barrier and interrupting the procession, sitting in front of the Israeli delegation carrying a Palestine flag.

Israeli broadcaster KAN said it had filed a complaint with Swiss police and requested that the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) identify and remove the individual from any further Eurovision events.

It added that a member of the Israeli delegation had recorded a "threatening" incident which it had reported to authorities. The EBU has said it is a matter for the police.

Following the incident, the Israeli delegation also announced that Raphael will not be giving interviews to accredited journalists due to "security reasons".

Calls to ban Israel from the popular song contest have been growing due to the country's brutal assault on Gaza, which has so far killed more than 52,000 Palestinians.

The country’s involvement last year was met with protests, while this year former contestants and national broadcasters have joined calls for Israel to be banned.

The National reported how dozens of former Eurovision contestants have demanded Israel's exclusion from the competition, as they accused the Israeli broadcaster of being "complicit in Israel's genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza".

Meanwhile, Ireland's national broadcaster RTE has joined several other European broadcasters in calling for a “discussion on” Israel’s inclusion in Eurovision.
