A pro-Palestine demonstrator is due in court over claims she banged pots and pans outside Downing Street and then refused to tell police her name.

Alama Uddin, 42, from Bexley, has been charged with a criminal offence over the incident in Whitehall on August 1.

It was on a day of mass action by Palestine supporters, who took to the streets to demonstrate about the situation in Gaza.

The event was branded “pots and pans day”, with activists making themselves heard by banging the cookery paraphernalia to create a cacophony of noise.

Uddin faces a charge of “failing to give name and address to constable”, while at the same time “engaging in anti-social behaviour”.

According to court papers, she is accused of “being a person whom a constable had reason to believe was engaging in anti-social behaviour, namely (she) was hitting pots and pans outside of Downing Street, this could be heard at great distance, failed when required by the constable to give your name and address”.

The charge is brought under the 2002 Police Reform Act, and if convicted it carries a maximum sentence of a fine.

Uddin is expected to appear at Westminster magistrates court at 2pm to face the charge for the first time on Monday.

Pro-Palestine activists have repeatedly used pots and pans as part of their demonstrations, including in Scotland this month to greet JD Vance on the latest stage of his UK holiday.

After the August 1 event, organisers said protestors had “gathered at Downing Street to demand an end to the starvation and genocide of Palestinians”.

“Thousands then marched peacefully through central London marking a powerful display with support from the public.

“The Met Police responded with violence-dragging protestors to the ground and arresting over 50 people. Protestors were held for around 16 hours and released with strict bail conditions.

“But despite the repression, protestors made one thing clear: we will not be intimidated.”
