Pro-Joe Biden advert says Donald Trump cannot be trusted as president because he does not have a dog

A political video supporting Joe Biden's presidential campaign has warned Donald Trump cannot be trusted because he is the only US leader in recent history not to have had a pet dog at the White House.

The video, released on Tuesday by an organisation called Dog Lovers For Joe Biden, features footage of past presidents Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush, Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Barack Obama with their beloved pets before cutting to Mr Trump making fun of dogs.

"Trump is the first President without a dog in the White House in over a century,’ says the video, which is not officially affiliated with Mr Biden's bid for office.

It then shows a photo of Mr Biden with his German Shepherd, named Champ, before adding: "Choose your humans wisely."

Reinforcing its message, the video also shows Mr Trump dismissively shaking his head at a rally, saying "How would I look walking a dog on the White House lawn?"

The 30-second-clip was created by Rob Schwartz, an advertising executive who told AdAge he undertook the eye-catching project as "a concerned American citizen".

"I was seeing all the wonderful photographs of Joe Biden and dogs on the internet and thought it was interesting," he said. "All of a sudden it just materialised."

The video's appearance comes just weeks ahead of the US presidential poll, with voters set to decide between Mr Trump and Mr Biden on November 3.

The winning candidate will be inaugurated as president on January 20, 2021.
