Pro-independence activists march through Glasgow and protest against Boris Johnson

Around 1,000 pro-independence activists marched through Glasgow city centre on Saturday afternoon in a protest against Boris Johnson.

The All Under One Banner (AUOB) march started at George Square before making its way towards Glasgow Green.

Organised as an 'emergency rally', the activists urged the PM to resign because "he partied while others died" following the recent revelations about rule-breaking gatherings in Downing Street.

In a clip shared by the group on Twitter, marchers chanted "Boris, Boris, Boris! Out, out, out!" as they made their way down Glasgow's High Street en route to the Clyde.

In a statement issued ahead of Saturday's gathering, the group said: "Millions of people are furious that this Westminster Tory Government continues to line the pockets of their rich and powerful friends, whilst the rest of us face rising living costs and savage attacks on our NHS, pensions and public services.

"It is time to take to the streets to demand Johnson must go and step up the fight to secure independence, which will in itself bring the end to Tory rule in Scotland once and for all.

"The Indy movement and indeed the Scottish Govt must seize this moment to assert our right to get out of this rotten toxic union."

SNP MP Stephen Flynn was among those rallying the marchers, tweeting beforehand: "It’s time to leave the chaos of Westminster behind."

AUOB told Glasgow City Council to expect as many as 5,000 protesters marching in the city centre - but has since confirmed the number was around a fifth of that.

It said later: "We're proud to announce that c. 1000 people took to the streets of Glasgow today on the emergency march for independence.

"This is a great turnout considering the short notice, the early start time and mass gatherings are only just permitted. The fight for independence is on!"
