Pro Football Focus shows love for ‘elite’ defensive tackle Lawrence Guy

Lawrence Guy was a rock in the middle of the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl-winning defense.

Guy served as a three-down threat, with excellent work as a run blocker and pass rusher during the course of the 2018 regular season and the postseason that followed. Because of his success, Guy was rated the 11th-best interior defensive lineman in 2018, according to Pro Football Focus. The digital scouting service gave him a grade of 90.1.

Guy finished the season with 59 tackles and one sack. He tallied six tackles and a half-sack in the Patriots’ playoff run. While Guy’s stats aren’t gaudy — something that’s typical for defensive tackles not named Aaron Donald — he was a major contributor by playing on 50 percent of snaps.

The team will likely lean on him just as much in 2019, as defensive tackles Malcom Brown and Danny Shelton are set to enter free agency. New England may retain Brown, a former first-round pick, but they’ll like need to add more talent at the position. Guy, meanwhile, is a solid and well-priced building block at defensive tackle.
