Pro Football Focus ranks P.J. Walker No. 30 among backup quarterbacks

Teddy Bridgewater was the best backup quarterback in the NFL the last couple of years. This season, much of the Panthers’ success will ride on whether or not he can be a capable full-time starter at this point in his career.

With Bridgewater starting in Carolina, his old title as QB2.1 has been taken by Jameis Winston, at least that’s according to Pro Football Focus. Now with the Saints, Winston has been appropriately ranked the top backup quarterback in the league going in 2020 by PFF. As for the Panthers, their projected QB2 is quite a bit lower on the list.

Like us, PFF is predicting that P.J. Walker will serve as Bridgewater’s primary backup this season. However, they don’t think too highly of him compared to the rest of the NFL’s understudies. PFF ranked Walker No. 30 of their 32 projected backups.

Walker admittedly doesn’t have a lot of experience in this league, but the arm talent and raw play-making ability he demonstrated in the XFL earlier this year was undeniable. If Bridgewater goes down it will be very interesting to see if Walker can translate that dynamic game against a much more difficult level of competition.
