Priyanka Chopra apologises for Quantico storyline after being branded 'insult to India'

Priyanka Chopra has apologised for an episode of US spy series Quantico which sparked a backlash from Indian fans.

The episode in question sees Chopra's character, anti-terrorist officer Alex Parrish, discover that Hindu nationalists are trying to frame Pakistanis for a nuclear attack in Manhattan days before a summit is to be held in the New York district regarding Kashmir, the disputed Himalayan territory claimed by India and Pakistan.

Following its broadcast on 1 June, Chopra has found herself at the centre of social media outrage which saw her branded "an insult to India." ABC has since called this criticism “unfair.”

“I'm extremely saddened and sorry that some sentiments have been hurt by a recent episode of Quantico,“ Chopra said on Twitter. ”That was not and would never be my intention. I sincerely apologise. I'm a proud Indian and that will never change.“

ABC and Quantico's producers also issued an apology “to our audience who were offended by the most recent episode, The Blood of Romeo.”

The spokesperson's statement continued: “The episode has stirred a lot of emotion, much of which is unfairly aimed at Priyanka Chopra, who didn't create the show, nor does she write or direct it,”

Quantico is Chopra's first American series for which she became the highest-paid Indian actress on US television. She recently appeared in the big-screen remake of hit TV series Baywatch alongside Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron.
