Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe: Enable misses out on historic third win at Paris Longchamp

Enable has come up short in her bid to become the first horse to ever win the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe on three occasions after Waldgeist claimed a stunning victory at Paris Longchamp.

Ridden by Frankie Detorri, John Gosden’s brilliant mare was chasing a hat-trick of wins in flat racing’s most prestigious contest, after her previous successes in 2017 and 2018.

Already the most successful jockey in the history of the race, this was Dettori was hunting a seventh win, to crown an incredible season in which, at the age 48, he has enjoyed his most successful campaign ever in terms of Group or Grade 1 wins.

Sent off a 4-6 favourite, Enable initially had to travel wide, but moved through the field and look to have the race won 400m out, only for 16/1 shot Waldgeist, for the French trainer-jockey combination of Andre Fabre and Pierre-Charles Boudot, to swoop late, just as the late Sea Of Class had threatened to last year.
